Bills GM Buddy Nix has made it clear that they will draft a quarterback in April. One of the top quarterbacks available, Ryan Nassib, played his college ball for current Bills head coach Doug Marrone and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett at Syracuse.

Let the three months of speculation begin.

It’s very easy to connect the dots to Nassib, and the Bills don’t have to look past their division to see how a similar relationship can work. The Dolphins drafted QB Ryan Tannehill last year, reuniting him with his college coach, Mike Sherman, Miami’s offensive coordinator.

Speaking with WGR-550 Radio in Buffalo on Friday, Nassib said the opportunity of playing for the Bills “would definitely be awesome.”

“My favorite offense is the one Coach Hackett is bringing to the Buffalo Bills," Nassib said. As a senior, Nassib led the country’s 17th-ranked offense at Syracuse.

Nassib was PFW’s All-American quarterback for the 2012 season. “Nassib showed continual improvement in a pro-style system, demonstrating the intelligence, toughness and competiveness to achieve greatness,” wrote senior editor Nolan Nawrocki

The transition for Nassib would certainly be facilitated by reuniting with Marrone and Hackett, and the Bills plan to draft a quarterback — but is he the quarterback that Nix and assistant GM Doug Whaley want for the future? A bigger question will revolve around if Nassib is worthy of being the eighth overall pick, especially for a team with holes to fill at linebacker and wide receiver. In a weak quarterback class, are the Bills in position to “reach” for Nassib?

It makes sense from Nassib’s point of view, and he would be the club’s first signalcaller taken in the first round since J.P. Losman in 2004. If this truly is Nix’s final draft as GM, though, he will want to make his mark at quarterback, and he won’t want to miss.
