The Cowboys have reached an agreement to hire veteran coach Monte Kiffin as their defensive coordinator, according to ESPN’s Ed Werder.
Kiffin spent the past three seasons an assistant head coach with USC where his son, Lane Kiffin, is the head coach.
Monte Kiffin was the Buccaneers’ defensive coordinator from 1996-2008, and his Tampa-2 scheme helped the Bucs win Super Bowl XXXVII. Prior to joining the Bucs, Kiffin was a defensive assistant for the Saints, Vikings, Jets, Bills and Packers.
Kiffin’s coaching career began in 1966 with Nebraska. His only head-coaching experience came at the college level with North Carolina State from 1980-82. He was the Vikings’ defensive coordinator in 1991 and Saints’ coordinator in 1995.
Kiffin replaces Rob Ryan, who was fired on Tuesday night.
