The Bills stayed in the AFC East for their latest coordinator hire.

Buffalo hired former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine to run the Bills’ defense, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen first reported.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan confirmed on Tuesday morning that Pettine would coach elsewhere in 2013. “Mike thinks it’s best that he go to a different team as defensive coordinator, and I wish him all the best, unless he goes to Buffalo,” Ryan said.

Pettine, who spent four seasons as the Jets’ defensive coordinator, interviewed with the Bills on Tuesday morning. He joins new head coach Doug Marrone’s staff, which added Nathaniel Hackett — who worked with Marrone at Syracuse — as the team’s offensive coordinator.
