The Jets fired offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen first reported. Rex Ryan later confirmed the move.

"At the end of the day, I wanted to move this team in a different direction offensively," Ryan said.

Sparano was hired last year to replace Brian Schottenheimer. The Jets, who went 6-10 on the season, were ranked 30th in the league in total offense, 12th in rushing, 30th in passing and 28th in total points.

Prior to joining the Jets, Sparano was the head coach of the Dolphins. He was fired near the end of the 2011 regular season.

Ryan said the Jets are looking for two coordinators, as defensive coordinator Mike Pettine will not return in 2013. Ryan confirmed that Pettine is interviewing with the Bills on Tuesday.

"Mike is going to have several opportunities to be a defensive coordinator," Ryan said. "Mike thinks it's best to go to a different team."

Ryan alluded to an in-house candidate being promoted to defensive coordinator, which could be defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman. Pettine had been with the Jets for four seasons.
