The Saints and Sean Payton agreed in principle to a multi-year contract extension, according to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer. The extension is for five years, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.

Payton is serving a year-long suspension for his role in the team’s alleged bounty program from 2009-11.

Reports indicated that Payton’s 2011 contract extension was voided by Roger Goodell. According to an ESPN report in November, the league took issue with a clause in Payton's contract allowing him to nix the deal if GM Mickey Loomis left the organization.

There were rumors that Payton would be a candidate to be the Cowboys’ head coach, but Jason Garrett appears set to return in 2013.

Payton, who won Super Bowl XLV with the Saints, is 62-34 as their coach. The Saints, coached by Aaron Kromer and Joe Vitt this season, is 7-8 after an 0-4 start.
