The Steelers suspended RB Rashard Mendenhall for one game for “conduct detrimental to the team.”

Mendenhall started the four games he played this season and had 34 carries for 113 yards and seven catches for 61 yards and a receiving touchdown.

"Rashard will get an opportunity to redeem himself, I'm sure, at some point along this journey," Mike Tomlin told the team’s website last week. "That's the nature of this thing. There's ebb and flow and opportunities are presented.”

Mendenhall reportedly did not attend Sunday's game after being deactivated, leading to his suspension.

Mendenhall was a healthy scratch in Week 14. He has three fumbles this season, losing one. Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman have been Pittsburgh’s top backs.

The Steelers activated RB Baron Batch to take Mendenhall’s roster spot. Batch has played in 10 games this season and has 25 carries for 49 yards and four catches for 31 yards.

The way we see it

The suspension is the latest in a series of setbacks for Mendenhall. He battled back from an ACL tear suffered in January, returning to play a key role in Pittsburgh’s Oct. 7 win vs. Philadelphia. However, he sustained an Achilles injury four days later vs. Tennessee, and he would miss the next four games. Two fumbles in the Week 12 loss at Cleveland landed him on the bench, and the day next day, he was third on the depth chart. In the final year of his contract, Mendenhall’s future with Pittsburgh looks murky at best.
