Falcons mindful of saving counters for playoffs

After another lackluster performance by the Falcons’ offense in the team’s Week 14 loss to the Panthers, doubt about Atlanta’s chances of making noise in the playoffs is on the rise.

We’re hearing talk around the league that defenses have caught on to the Atlanta offense — it has sputtered, going 3-for-19 on third down in the past two games. QB Matt Ryan, who has fallen from the perch he had as a leading MVP candidate early in the season, has been playing some of his worst football of the season lately. Atlanta is not making the chunk-yardage plays through the air that it was earlier in the season.

However, one insider said there is a theory that the Falcons will not reveal all the adjustments they may be inclined to make in the playoffs in the last several weeks of the regular season. With the NFC South title already in hand and a first-round bye likely, the Falcons are not facing must-win games at this point. Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter could hold off on revealing new wrinkles and save his counters for the playoffs.
