The Lions have used second-round picks on wide receivers in back-to-back drafts, but the position again could be a need in the offseason with rookie Ryan Broyles suffering an ACL tear (his second in as many years) on Dec. 2 and second-year player Titus Young’s future with the club much in doubt because of attitude concerns. What’s more, veteran Nate Burleson is recovering from a broken leg suffered Oct. 22. Burleson’s injury opened the door for Young and Broyles to have bigger roles. Now, with Young and Broyles out, ex-Jaguars WR Mike Thomas gets his chance to show what he can do in the final weeks of the regular season. The way we hear it, Thomas figures to have a role in the WR corps next season, with Burleson also a potential contributor if he's back in 2013. Broyles’ injury is tough for player and team, as he showed promise in his first year back from the ACL tear suffered in his senior season at Oklahoma. Meanwhile, the Lions’ relationship with Young is strained, to put it mildly. He’s slated to have knee surgery after being placed on injured reserve on Dec. 4. Head coach Jim Schwartz quipped that Young will have surgery "unless he doesn’t show up for it.”
