The Panthers revealed last week that they had hired former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi to serve as a consultant while they conduct their search for a new general manager. Aside from that announcement, the club has not been very forthcoming about their process for replacing GM Marty Hurney since owner Jerry Richardson fired him on Oct. 22.

Team president Danny Morrison declined to speak on the record about the search when PFW asked him for a comment on the matter last month.

League observers have speculated on who Accorsi already might have on the list of GM candidates he will submit to Richardson, but a source familiar with the Panthers’ search said it appears the field is wide open at this juncture.

It is not known if Accorsi will be offering Richardson any advice on what to do about head coach Ron Rivera, but indications are it was been relayed to Rivera before the hiring of Accorsi that the Panthers need to be trending upward toward the end of the season for him to avoid the same fate as Hurney. Rivera still has two years left on the four-year contract he signed before the 2011 season.
