Cowboys' Garrett might be in firm standing

Before the recent endorsement of the direction of the team by Cowboys executive Stephen Jones, the fate of head coach Jason Garrett laid seemingly in the balance. Sources have told PFW that Garrett’s place with the team continues to be strong and that owner Jerry Jones’ proclamation prior to the Falcons game that he plans on having Garrett as his coach “for a long time” remains the team’s plan and focus.

Garrett still needs to win, no doubt. A severe losing streak or an indication he has lost the team would not bode well, obviously. But a weaker second-half schedule indicates that the course of season could turn around, and the team is in far better shape, for instance, in a lot of ways than the Eagles or Redskins in the division.

One big loss could change things, but for now the Cowboys are keeping with their statement that Garrett is their guy, despite the tempting allure of big-name coaches who could be available this offseason, such as Jon Gruden or Sean Payton, both of whom have ties to Jerry Jones.
