The Chiefs waived CB Stanford Routt on Monday and signed veteran DT Shaun Smith.

Routt signed a three-year, $18 million deal with the Chiefs in February after the Raiders waived him. His contract included $6 million guaranteed. In seven games, all starts, this season Routt had 21 tackles, four passes defensed and two interceptions.

Smith played in 15 games with six starts for the Titans last season and had 25 tackles and one sack. He played in all 16 games with 10 starts for the Chiefs in 2010, making 56 tackles and one sack.

Head coach Romeo Crennel said the “relationship” with Routt was not progressing, according to Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star.

The changes did not stop there: Crennel named linebackers coach Gary Gibbs the defensive coordinator. Crennel had been the defensive play-caller. The 1-7 Chiefs are 17th in the league in total defense.
