Panthers LB Jon Beason told News 14 Carolina that he needs surgery on his knee and PFW Panthers correspondent Joe Person is reporting the team has placed him on injured reserve.

Beason has been inactive the past two games. He missed all of 2011 with left Achilles tendon injury.

"I've been pretty banged up, it's been week to week, and we decided to take another look at the knee, see what's going on,” he said. “(I) got the MRI yesterday and it didn't look good so I'm probably going to have to have surgery and if I do that I'm going to end up on the IR. So that's probably what we're going to do, moving forward, probably early next week. But, it's part of the business man. You can't control injuries."

In his four games this season (all starts), Beason has 28 tackles, two passes defensed and an interception. He started every game from 2007-10 and recorded more than 120 tackles each of those four seasons. Rookie Luke Kuechly will remain as the team’s starter at middle linebacker.

The way we see it

Carolina has solid depth at linebacker and Kuechly has played well in the middle, but there is no doubt the defense has been weakened with the losses of Beason and CB Chris Gamble, who was placed on injured reserve Monday.

With the Panthers just beginning their search for a new general manager, many players on the team face uncertain futures, and given Beason's recent injury woes (he will have missed 27 of the team's last 32 games by the end of this season), he certainly has to be considered part of that group.
