Following the abrupt firing of GM Marty Hurney, the question confronting the unraveling Panthers is: Will they will rally together in an effort to save head coach Ron Rivera’s job or drift farther apart?
On the heels of the team’s home loss to the Cowboys in Week Seven, our sources say all signs pointed to things moving in the wrong direction. QB Cam Newton was publicly critical of offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski after the game and respected veteran RB DeAngelo Williams was clearly peeved about his lack of playing time (he had only two carries and played five snaps Sunday). On Monday, Rivera responded by putting his assistant coaches and players on notice, saying firings and roster cuts were certainly on the table.
Rivera, who is signed through the 2014 season, also said Monday he is going to coach as if his job is at stake in the final 10 games of the season. We’re hearing that is the right approach for him to be taking with owner Jerry Richardson’s patience wearing thin and players losing confidence in their leader.
