The Eagles fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo and named secondary coach Todd Bowles the new defensive coordinator, the team announced Tuesday.
“We’re six games into the season and average isn’t good enough,” head coach Andy Reid said in a statement. “I know the potential of our team and insist on maximizing it.”
Castillo had been the team’s offensive line coach from 1998-2010 before taking over the defense last season. He hadn’t coached on the defensive side of the ball prior that since 1989 at Kingsville High School. Castillo had been with the Eagles since 1995.
Bowles joined the Eagles’ staff this past offseason after four years with the Dolphins as their secondary coach and assistant head coach. He was Miami’s interim head coach at the end of last season and interviewed for their head-coaching position.
Through six games, the Eagles are 12th in the league in total defense. Last season, the unit finished eighth thanks to a strong finish, but the team did not make the playoffs. Philadelphia is 3-3 on the season.
