This is only the second time in PK Jason Hanson’s 21 NFL seasons that opponents have returned more than one of his kickoffs for a touchdown. What’s more, never had the Lions surrendered a return TD on a Hanson kickoff in consecutive weeks before giving up kickoff scores to Tennessee and Minnesota in Weeks Three and Four. Now, it’s up to the Lions’ special teams to fix the problems that led to four return scores against them in that forgettable two-game span. In an interview leading up to Week Six, Hanson told PFW that the club’s coverage problems have been a product of multiple causes and that opponents will be eager to face the Lions’ special teams “until we have some back-to-back good (performances).” Hanson took some responsibility for some of the kickoff-coverage woes, noting that one of the TDs, presumably Titans KR Darius Reynaud’s 105-yard return in Week Three, “was almost completely my fault” on the basis of him not placing the ball as had been planned. Hanson told PFW that he has seen some signs of improvement from the special teams of late.
