Packers RB Cedric Benson has a Lisfranc foot injury that likely will keep him out eight weeks and potentially the rest of the season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. According to Schefter, Benson might need surgery, which probably would end his season.
Benson appeared to get his left foot caught underneath him as he was tackled by Colts LB Moise Fokou in the second quarter of Sunday’s 30-27 loss at Indianapolis. He left the game after gaining 41 total yards on 11 touches.
Added late in the preseason, Benson made a strong impact for the Packers early, starting all five games this season. After a quiet Week One, he had been effective, racking up more than 100 combined yards in wins over Chicago and New Orleans.
The way we see it
Benson’s injury leaves the Packers awfully thin at running back, which is worrisome considering the lack of balance they’ve shown at times this season. Look for Alex Green, a third-round pick in 2011, to receive more carries — as he did in the second half Sunday (63 total yards on eight touches, 50 of which came in the second half).
Meanwhile, WR-RS Randall Cobb might get a few more looks in the backfield, where the Packers have occasionally experimented with him this season.
