TE Kellen Winslow asked for and received his release from the Patriots on Thursday, ESPN first reported.
Winslow signed with the Patriots last week, adding depth to the position after New England lost Aaron Hernandez to an ankle injury in Week Two. He played in four offensive snaps in Sunday night’s loss to the Ravens and had one catch for 12 yards on two targets.
Winslow spent the preseason with the Seahawks after playing for the Buccaneers from 2009-11. He had 75 catches for 763 yards and two touchdowns last season.
At tight end, the Patriots have Rob Gronkowski, Daniel Fells and Michael Hoomanawanui, and Adam Schefter reported that Hernandez is healing quicker than expected.
