The Bills made no secret about upgrading their backup quarterback situation this offseason, starting by signing Vince Young. When that didn’t pan out, the Bills traded for Tarvaris Jackson.

Jackson remains the No. 3 quarterback behind Tyler Thigpen, who took a pay cut in September and knows the offense. Another interesting factor involving Thigpen, who is now fighting off a second quarterback to keep his backup role, is that Chan Gailey has loyalty to Thigpen dating back to when the two worked together in Kansas City. Thigpen's big advantage is his knowledge of the offense.

Jackson has had to learn to the playbook, something that is not easy when the reps are hard to come by during in-season practices, one daily team observer pointed out. According to the Buffalo News, Gailey will make an announcement if there’s a change on the QB depth chart.

Ryan Fitzpatrick played better in Week Two after a disastrous opener, but he only threw the ball 19 times, partially quieting the concerns from Week One. When it comes to Gailey’s loyalty, we’re told he has plenty of it for Fitzpatrick, and the Bills have never wavered about his position as the starter, despite last year’s second-half struggles. The question now is if Jackson remains unready, how much confidence do the Bills have in Thigpen if he’s needed?
