The Buccaneers’ Ronde Barber showed in Week One why first-year head coach Greg Schiano made re-signing Barber for at least one more year a top priority after being hired in the offseason.
Barber was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week by the NFL after he recorded a sack, two tackles for loss and an interception in an impressive Week One performance by the defense Barber captains in the team’s win over the Panthers. It has Barber’s 200th consecutive start and his first in his new role as a safety/slot corner.
Heading into the regular season, Barber did not sugarcoat his opinion of the Buccaneers — he was cautiously optimistic but not sure what to expect with a new coaching staff, new schemes on offense and defense and a young team. We hear Schiano was not at all put-off by Barber’s admission. The Bucs hope the 16th-year veteran continues to be a steadying presence, on and off the field, for the team.
