The Bears signed RB Kahlil Bell to a one-year contract on Saturday and waived S Jeremy Jones.
Bell was released by the Bears in August after he refused to take a paycut.
Bell has appeared in 20 games with three starts in three seasons with the Bears. He rushed for 337 yards on 79 carries and caught 19 passes for 133 yards and one touchdown in 2011.
The signing of Bell comes in the wake of Matt Forté’s ankle injury, which he suffered on Thursday night against the Packers. It has been reported that Forté could miss up to six weeks with the injury.
Bell will back up Michael Bush, who is now expected to handle the majority of the ground work.
