The Rams are bringing back backup QB Kellen Clemens Thursday after releasing him during the team's final roster cuts on Aug. 31.

As the primary backup to injury-prone starter Sam Bradford, Clemens was considered a surprise name on the Rams’ final cut list. His release left undrafted rookie Austin Davis as the team’s No. 2 quarterback for the Rams’ Week One game against the Lions.

Clemens’ return to the team once again will pair him with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who coached Clemens on the Jets until Clemens left after the 2010 season.

To make room for Clemens, the Rams released fourth-year DT Darell Scott, who hasn’t started a game since his rookie season. Scott was drafted by St. Louis in the fourth round of the 2009 draft.

The way we see it

Had he remained on the roster for Week One, Clemens’ contract would have been fully guaranteed for the season. By re-signing him after the first week, the Rams will be paying week to week for the security of an experienced backup for Bradford, without any money guaranteed.
