Falcons CB Brent Grimes will go on injured reserve after suffering an Achilles injury in Sunday’s game, head coach Mike Smith announced Monday.

Grimes was playing under the franchise tender in 2012 worth $10.2 million. In his five seasons with the Falcons, he has 56 passes defensed and 13 interceptions.

Last season, Grimes started all 12 games in which he played and had 14 passes defensed, one interception and one forced fumble.

Grimes had six tackles in the first half of Sunday’s 40-24 win over the Chiefs. He was the Falcons’ starting corner opposite Dunta Robinson. Atlanta has CB Asante Samuel on the roster and recently re-signed Dominique Franks.

The way we see it

This is horrible news for the Falcons and Grimes, who was hoping to have a big season heading toward a chance at unrestricted free agency. Samuel could slide over to become the starting left corner, but this weakens the nickel package that the team was very excited about all offseason.
