A report from Dave Birkett of The Detroit News says that Lions DE Kyle Vanden Bosch, one of the team captains for this season, agreed to restructure his contract Thursday to help the team create salary-cap space.

According to Birkett, Vanden Bosch, who was scheduled to make $5 million this season, converted most of his base salary to a signing bonus, saving the team $3 million against the cap. His base salary is now $925,000, with $4.075 million going to him as a signing bonus.

The team also reportedly added two voidable years to the end of the 33-year-old Vanden Bosch's contract, which was due to expire after the 2012 season, in order to spread the bonus over three seasons.

Before this move, the Lions reportedly were $700,000 over the NFL's salary-cap limit of $120.6 million.
