The Patriots signed former Dolphins RB Lex Hilliard on Tuesday. Hilliard is the fifth running back on the team’s roster. Hilliard was released by the Vikings on Friday after signing as a free agent with the team in March.
To make room for Hilliard, New England waived C Matt Tennant just days after acquiring him. The Patriots claimed Tennant off waivers on Saturday after he was waived by New Orleans on Friday.
Hilliard’s impact as a runner has been limited in his three-year career; he’s tallied just 39 carries in 48 career games while averaging 3.3 yards per carry. He has shown some value as a receiver and on special teams, catching 20 passes for 158 yards in 2009 and totaling 20 tackles and five assisted tackles in three seasons on special teams.
Tennant played in 28 games for the Saints, almost entirely on special teams, in his two seasons since being selected by New Orleans in the fifth round of the 2010 draft.
