The Dolphins did not carry four quarterbacks on their roster for very long.

Miami released veteran QB David Garrard on Tuesday.

Garrard tweeted the following: “To all the dolphins fans thx for ur support! Best of luck to all my teammates. Thx for making me feel at home!! Phins up!”

Garrard signed with the Dolphins in the spring after missing the entire 2011 season because of a back injury. In 2010 with the Jaguars, Garrard threw a career-high 23 touchdowns. He spent the first nine seasons of his career with Jacksonville and has 89 career touchdown passes.

Before the team’s first preseason game, Garrard underwent knee surgery. He was in line to win the Dolphins’ starting job prior to the injury. Garrard returned to practice in a limited basis with the team on Monday.

Rookie QB Ryan Tannehill was named the starter in the preseason. Veteran Matt Moore and first-year QB Pat Devlin are also on the roster.

In addition to cutting Garrard, the Dolphins placed veteran OG Artis Hicks on injured reserve and signed OT Ray Feinga. Hicks, 33, started three games last season for Washington and has started 71 games in his career.
