The Chargers will place WR Vincent Brown on injured reserve with the new “Designated to Return” label, the team announced Tuesday.
Brown broke his ankle scoring a touchdown in the team’s second preseason game on Aug. 18. He is expected to miss at least the first eight weeks of the regular season, but won’t count against the 53-man roster and can return later in the season.
The new rule allows for teams to place one player with a “major injury” on I.R. to be reactivated at a later time. A “major injury” is an injury that keeps a player off the field for at least six weeks.
Brown had 19 catches for 329 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games as a rookie last season. He was having a very strong preseason before the injury.
