Bengals C Kyle Cook received the “designated to return” injury label, allowing him to be placed on injured reserve with the option of being reactivated later. He suffered an ankle injury Aug. 23.

The “designated to return” label is part of a new rule that allows teams to place one player with a “major injury” on injured reserve with the designation that the player may return during the season. Cook will be allowed to participate in Bengals practices after six weeks and could be activated for a game after eight weeks, according to the team’s website.

Cook’s absence will leave the Bengals without two starters on the offensive line for at least half the season. Starting LG Travelle Wharton is out for the year with a knee injury.

With Cook temporarily off the team’s roster, the Bengals used the extra spot to sign TE Richard Quinn, who was released by the Redskins on Friday. Quinn’s impact will be primarily in the blocking game, as he has caught just one NFL pass for nine yards in three seasons. The Broncos drafted Quinn in the second round in 2009 before releasing him following the 2010 season.
