A day after surviving the "final" roster cuts, QB Stephen McGee was released by the Cowboys on Saturday.
The team made the move so it could sign TE Colin Cochart off waivers from the Bengals.
The Cochart signing is believed to be a hedge in case Jason Witten, who is still recovering from a spleen injury, isn't ready to play on Wednesday night's game against the Giants.
Cochart, a second-year player out of South Dakota State, appeared in 10 games in 2011, starting three. He caught five passes for 44 yards and one touchdown.
McGee, who was the team's No. 3 quarterback behind Tony Romo and Kyle Orton, appeared in one game in 2011, a 20-7 Week 16 loss to the Eagles. He completed 24-of-38 passes for 182 yards with one TD in the contest.
