With uncertainty surrounding the severity of starting C Kyle Cook’s ankle injury, the Bengals are bringing in C Jeff Faine for a visit, according to multiple reports.

Cook was injured Thursday night against Green Bay and won’t play in the Bengals’ final preseason game this Thursday against the Colts, according to head coach Marvin Lewis.

“We don't know how much time (he'll miss),” Lewis said, per the Bengals' website. “He's trying to figure out the best options for him as well and we'll evaluate it from there."

Lewis added that the team will “have to explore some options” at the position, likely prompting Faine’s visit. Faine started 23 games in the last two seasons for Tampa Bay but was released this offseason. The 31-year-old has 117 career starts.

Cook has started every game in each of the past three seasons for the Bengals. Along the interior, Cincinnati has its 2012 first-round pick, Kevin Zeitler, starting at right guard, but already lost starting left guard Travelle Wharton to a season ending knee injury.

The way we see it

With Wharton gone for the season and the haziness of Cook’s ankle injury, Faine would provide an experienced safety net should Cook have to miss significant time. Whether Cincinnati signs Faine or not, the banged up O-line will have its hands full against Baltimore and Haloti Ngata in Week One.
