The Jets claimed P Spencer Lanning off waivers from the Browns, creating competition for second-year P T.J. Conley.

Conley had a net average of 38.8 yards per punt as a rookie in 2011, while putting 32 punts inside the 20-yard line against just six touchbacks. Lanning has punted four times this preseason with an average of 50.5 yards per punt. He has never attempted a regular-season punt.

The Bears also put in a waiver claim for Lanning as a safety net for injured P Adam Podlesh, according to the Chicago Tribune. The Jets had the higher waiver claim position.
