The Texans announced several roster moves on Monday to help them get down to the 75-player roster limit required by the league.

They released C Thomas Austin, ILB Omar Gaither, P Brett Hartmann, WR Bryant Johnson, WR Mario Louis, RB Davin Meggett, OT Nick Mondek, OT Jimmy Saddler-McQueen, FB Derrell Smith, OG Kasey Studdard and CB Torri Williams.

Rookie PK Randy Bullock was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a groin injury.

ILB Darryl Sharpton (knee/quad) was placed on the reserve/PUP list, meaning he must wait until after Week Six of the NFL regular season before he can be activated to the roster, placed on injured reserve or waived.

Finally, the team waived/injured NT Ra'Shon Harris (triceps) and ILB Greg Williams (hamstring).

The way we see it

Perhaps the biggest surprise among Houston's cuts is Mondek, the former Purdue product who was drafted in the sixth round. Mondek was said to be a developmental prospect, so it is interesting that a team with as strong of a recent drafting record as the Texans would decide to cut their losses so soon.

Johnson is the biggest name on this list, but he was on the street until the Texans signed him late last season and Houston's young WRs, namely rookie Keshawn Martin and first-year player Lester Jean, have shown enough in camp that the club felt comfortable releasing the veteran.
