Colts owner Jim Irsay has been hinting at a big trade all weekend, and it appears Indianapolis has acquired a starting cornerback.

The Dolphins traded former first-round CB Vontae Davis to the Colts for a second-round pick and a conditional sixth-rounder, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer first reported.

“Bottom line with this move today is we got better as a football team,” said Colts GM Ryan Grigson. “That is always the goal each day for this organization. From the first time he stepped on the field at Illinois as a freshman or in the National Football League as a rookie, you knew Vontae was a special talent. Now he has a chance under Coach Pagano and this coaching staff to reach not only his potential as a football player, but as a person as well. That is our collective goal moving forward.”

Davis is entering his fourth season and has started 36 games in his career. As an outside corner for Miami in his three seasons, Davis totaled 32 passes defensed and nine interceptions, including four picks in 12 games last season.

“We appreciate all the contributions Vontae has made to the Dolphins since we drafted him in 2009 and we want to wish him the best of success in Indianapolis,” said Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland.

HBO’s “Hard Knocks” helped explain why Davis had lost his starting spot to free-agent newcomer Richard Marshall, as the coaching staff had criticism for Davis’ work ethic and practice performances.

The Colts were looking for a starting corner opposite Jerraud Powers, which is likely where Davis will play.

The way we see it

The Colts were in desperate need of help at cornerback, and while Davis had his issues with the Dolphins’ staff, he is still a young, physical, athletic corner who only two years ago was lauded by Brett Favre as one of the best corners people did not know about.

For Miami, this puts some pressure on third-year CB Nolan Carroll, who likely will be the team’s No. 3 corner and play on the outside in the nickel, moving Marshall into the slot. Carroll has had a solid preseason after not showing much in his first two seasons. Sean Smith becomes the team’s new No. 1 corner, and he is starting to play up to his potential.
