Urlacher's knee a long-term issue for Bears

The question of whether it will be Brian Urlacher or Nick Roach starting at middle linebacker for the Bears in their Sept. 9 season opener vs. the Colts continues to be a source of consternation for some Bears fans. We are hearing the team still believes there is a very realistic chance that Urlacher will be able to play in the game, though.

Urlacher has missed all of the preseason and sat out all but a few early training-camp practices with a left knee injury, which he suffered in the final game of the 2011 campaign. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on the knee Aug. 14 and there are reports he had multiple procedures on the knee this offseason, including one performed in Germany that has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The bigger question for the Bears moving forward is how Urlacher’s knee will hold up the further the team gets into the regular season. Sources do not expect him to be involved much, if at all, in practices during the season.
