49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters Thursday that second-year QB Colin Kaepernick will be the team’s No. 2 signalcaller, according to Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group.

Kaepernick will back up starter Alex Smith, beating out free-agent newcomer Josh Johnson for the No. 2 job.

In his first two preseason games, Kaepernick completed 9-of-17 passes for 59 yards. He was asecond-round pick in 2011.
