Jets ORT Wayne Hunter has lost his starting job, head coach Rex Ryan told reporters Thursday.
The much-maligned Hunter had a poor performance in last weekend’s preseason game against the Giants. He started every game last season, replacing the retired Damien Woody, and led the team in penalties.
Hunter has been in the league for nine seasons and has logged 63 games and 21 starts. Ryan said Hunter would be on the field in the team’s jumbo package.
Austin Howard, who was on the practice squad last season, will move into the starting role.
Hunter received his $2.45 million base salary in February, so he likely won’t be cut. The Jets confirmed that they do not intend to trade Hunter, according to multiple reports.
Howard played in four games with one start for the Eagles in 2010.
