CSNBayArea.com’s Matt Maiocco is speculating that Niners WR A.J. Jenkins, a surprise first-round pick in the eyes of many league observers, is almost certain to be spending the majority of his time this season on the inactive list.
Maiocco wrote that Jenkins’ first-round status virtually assures that he will make the team’s 53-man roster. But with Michael Crabtree, Randy Moss, Mario Manningham, Ted Ginn and Kyle Williams clearly ahead of Jenkins on the depth chart, it seems highly unlikely he will be active for games any time soon.
Niners head coach Jim Harbaugh came to Jenkins’ defense the first week of training camp with a glowing endorsement of his first-round selection, telling the local media the receiver out of Illinois was an "outstanding football player." But while he has displayed flashes of brilliance this offseason on occasion, Jenkins also has had numerous problems holding on to balls and correctly running routes.
Jenkins is likely to get a lot of playing time Saturday evening against the Texans.
