The Lions’ running game started the preseason on a positive note, with reserves Keiland Williams and Joique Bell combining for 160 yards on 25 attempts. Overall, Detroit racked up 198 yards on 33 attempts.  Though the production of Williams and Bell largely came against backups, the Lions’ rushing output with RBs Jahvid Best (concussion) and Mikel Leshoure (hamstring) sitting out was nonetheless encouraging. “Keiland went in and creased a couple and so did Joique and they were running, generally, against bad boxes — meaning they were eight-man fronts, which are difficult to run against,” Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said. “But both of those guys ran hard, both of them fought for extra yardage, both of them did a nice job.” Should injuries continue to be an issue for the Lions’ RB corps, Williams and Bell will have chances to perform leading up to the season. RB Kevin Smith, ahead of Williams and Bell in the pecking order, rushed for 28 yards on five carries early in the game.
