Injuries plague Falcons' defense up the middle

The Falcons went through much of the offseason expecting to see training-camp battles for spots in the rotation at defensive tackle and for the starting job at middle linebacker. Injuries at those positions, however, have been the bigger story than any competition at those spots to this point.

The return of DT Corey Peters, Atlanta’s top interior D-lineman last season, is not imminent. He has been sidelined since the spring and is still 10-14 days away from having his injured left foot reevaluated by medical staff, Falcons head coach Mike Smith said Aug. 11. The Falcons are hoping to get DT Vance Walker, who has been out with a foot injury since Aug. 2, back on the practice field this week.

Starting MLB Akeem Dent, who was spared a camp battle for his job after Lofa Tatupu tore his pectoral, is going through the league’s concussion protocol after suffering a concussion in Atlanta’s preseason opener. It’s not clear when he will be able to return.
