The Bengals have the makings of solid CB depth, and that eventually could be the case, but as the preseason began, injuries had taken their toll on the position. Rookie CB Dre Kirkpatrick’s ability to be a key contributor at the start of the season is in question, the way we hear it, after a July knee injury. Third-year CB Brandon Ghee, who had shown improvement, could miss the preseason with a wrist injury, and rookie CB Shaun Prater will miss the season with a knee injury. The collective durability of the CB corps is no small issue to keep an eye on as the season nears. Another issue that could affect the Bengals’ CB plans is whether someone steps up at strong safety. Third-year pro Taylor Mays is the current favorite to win the job, but if he falters, it will be interesting to see how the Bengals proceed. It’s worth noting that CB Nate Clements has received some work at safety.
