Vikings rookie WR Greg Childs suffered torn patellar tendons in both knees late in Saturday night's scrimmage at Verizon Vikings Training Camp, it was announced by the team.
Childs, a fourth-round pick out of Arkansas, fell to the turf untouched while diving for a pass. The team had hoped he would take over the split end job while Jerome Simpson serves his three-game suspension at the start of the season.
The Vikings' statement regarding Childs' condition said, "Greg Childs suffered a torn patellar tendon on his right and left knees last night. He is expected to have them surgically repaired within the next few days."
Following surgery, he faces a long rehabilitation period that could affect his ability to contribute in 2013 as well.
Childs previously had dealt with a patellar tendon tear, during his junior season at Arkansas in 2010. He also suffered a calf strain during the Vikings' rookie minicamp in May.
