The season-ending Achilles injury to WLB Chris Gocong hurts the Browns on multiple levels. Athletic and versatile, Gocong was a solid starter for a defense that played quite well a season ago. “He brought that speed, that blitzing ability, that toughness that they’re going to lose,” one NFL personnel man, speaking on condition of anonymity, told PFW on Saturday afternoon when it appeared Gocong’s injury was season-threatening. The loss of Gocong is another blow to a defense that will be short-handed early in the season. With Gocong out, SLB Scott Fujita slated to be suspended the first three games of the regular season and DT Phil Taylor (pectoral) likely to miss the start of the campaign, the Browns’ defense looks likely to be missing three starters from a season ago when Philadelphia visits Cleveland in Week One. At linebacker, fourth-year pro Kaluka Maiava and rookie James-Michael Johnson could be the OLB tandem to begin the season, the way we hear it, and LB depth could be a concern.
