Having a solid backup plan at the most important position on the football field is a must. Just ask former Bears GM Jerry Angelo or former Colts vice chairman Bill Polian. After last season, the Texans know the value of having a backup plan behind the backup plan.

Following the surprising contributions of T.J. Yates, who led the Texans to their first-ever postseason berth after Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart suffered season-ending injuries in consecutive games last season, Yates will replace Leinart as the backup for 2012, leaving an opening at No. 3.

Veteran John Beck and rookie Case Keenum will battle for the vacancy in training camp, and sources tell PFW that Beck is a very strong candidate to earn the job, with Keenum likely to wind up on the practice squad. Though the still-green Yates performed relatively well last season despite being a rookie who received limited reps in practice, a source said the Texans prefer Beck because of his five years of NFL experience, including seven career starts.
