Heading into training camp, sources told PFW it was conceivable that OLB Scott Shanle could end up on the roster bubble after the team revamped its LB corps in the offseason. Chris Chamberlain, who started for Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo when they were both with the Rams last season, is six years younger than Shanle and will compete against him to start on the strong side. Saints interim head coach Joe Vitt has indicated he sees no signs of decline in Shanle’s ability, though.
“(Shanle is) a guy that over the course of his career has really taken good care of himself,” Vitt said. “Every year as a coach, you look and say, ‘Is there going to be a diminishing skill level?’ And you still haven’t seen it yet. He still has a quick twitch, he’s got some long speed and he’s got good use of his hands.”
Shanle, who turns 33 in November, is in the final year of a two-year deal he signed last offseason.
