The Bengals signed defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer to a contract extension through the 2014 season, according to PFW Bengals correspondent Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Zimmer is entering his fifth season with the Bengals. Last season, Cincinnati’s defense ranked seventh overall and ninth in points allowed, helping the team reach the playoffs as an AFC wild-card team.

Zimmer was the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator from 2000-06 and served the same role with the Falcons in ’07.

The way we see it

Zimmer, who also has drawn attention from clubs looking to fill head-coaching vacancies in recent years, is one of the NFL's most well-regarded defensive coordinators. The Bengals' coordinator tandem of Zimmer and Jay Gruden (offense) is a definite strength.
