Former 49ers DT Cleveland Elam, a Pro Bowler in 1976 and '77, passed away on July 12 at age 60, the club said Wednesday.
Elam, 60, garnered first-team all-NFL and all-NFC honors from Pro Football Weekly in 1977, when he notched 18½ sacks, according to club statistics. The previous season, he was credited with 14 sacks by the club.
Elam was traded to the Lions in 1979. He played one season with Detroit, notching one sack, and was released the next year.
Elam, who was part of a Niners defensive line tabbed the "Gold Rush," was a fourth-round pick of San Francisco out of Tennessee State in 1975. As a collegian, Elam played defensive tackle, defensive end, outside linebacker and middle linebacker.
A memorlal service will be held in Salisbury, N.C. on July 21 for Elam, who is survived by his wife and four children.
