NFL commissioner Roger Goodell filed a motion to dismiss Saints LB Jonathan Vilma’s defamation claims.

Vilma filed a lawsuit in May in federal court in New Orleans that his year-long suspension for his alleged role in the Saints’ bounty program is without merit, and that Goodell has damaged Vilma’s reputation.

According to reports, in Goodell’s response, which was due on Thursday, the commissioner requested for oral arguments to be heard by the court because they “will materially assist this Court in defining the scope of, and resolution of, the issues raised in the pending motion.”

Vilma amended his initial complaint, asking for a temporary restraining order hearing to allow him to work while his case is pending.

Earlier on Thursday, the NFLPA sued the league on behalf of Will Smith, Anthony Hargrove and Scott Fujita, challenging Goodell’s Tuesday ruling which upheld their respective suspensions following appeal hearings.
