The Lions did not draft a running back, nor did they add a veteran in free agency. They look likely to lean on the trio of Jahvid Best, Mikel Leshoure and Kevin Smith — each of whom comes with durability concerns. This begs the question: do they have enough depth at the position? The answer, as one NFL personnel man told PFW, just won’t be known until the season plays out, but the Lions, in his view, have a solid RB group, provided they aren't hit by injuries like a season ago. “I think all things being what they are right now, they would be OK at that position,” said the evaluator, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Noted the evaluator, “I think they have talent there.” The Lions won’t have Leshoure for the first two games of 2012 because of suspension, but he has been able to participate somewhat in offseason workouts. Moreover, Lions GM Martin Mayhew praised Best for his offseason performance.
