Initial coaching staff reviews on rookie DE Shea McClellin’s showing in the recently completed round of non-contact offseason team activities and minicamp were positive, but the evaluation process will not kick into high gear until the Bears reconvene for training camp and hold their first practice in full pads on July 28.

While McClellin has been taking reps with the reserve units this offseason, the Bears want to see him compete for the starting job at left end in training camp, and he’s going to have to beat out veteran Israel Idonije, who was getting the first-team snaps at the DLE spot during OTAs and minicamp, to get the nod.

Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli told reporters June 14 that McClellin is “a real hungry guy." The Bears are hoping to see his competitive nature at full throttle when he returns in late July.

At minimum, McClellin is expected to serve as a situational pass rusher — relieving Idonije on passing downs — in his first season.
