The Texans have given contract extensions to head coach Gary Kubiak and GM Rick Smith, Houston Chronicle writer and PFW correspondent John McClain reported Thursday morning.

The contracts of both Kubiak and Smith were set to expire after the 2012 season. Texans owner Bob McNair said that Kubiak's extension is through 2014 and Smith's is through 2016.

Kubiak led the Texans to a 10-6 regular-season mark and their first-ever postseason appearance in 2011. This after coming under serious heat from large portion of the Houston fanbase in 2010, when the Texans finish 6-10.

The way we see it

The new deals for Smith and Kubiak don’t come as a big surprise, as McNair revealed last month that contract discussions were under way, but the timing is right for the well-deserved extensions. Kubiak helped his troops persevere through a barrage of injuries, including losing their top two QBs, No. 1 WR and best defensive player for much of the season, amid the Texans’ most successful campaign in franchise history in 2011. The success wouldn’t have been possible without Smith’s hugely successful offseason haul, which netted no less than five players who made major contributions on Houston’s radically revamped “D.”
