The Giants waived/failed physical TE Jake Ballard and re-signed DT Rocky Bernard, the team announced on Monday.
Ballard played in 14 games with 13 starts last season, catching 38 passes for 604 yards and three touchdowns. He had two catches for 10 yards in the Super Bowl before tearing his ACL in the third quarter.
Ballard also underwent microfracture surgery to repair cartilage, as reported in April by the Bergen Record. Giants TE Travis Beckum also tore his ACL in the Super Bowl. The team signed ex-Cowboy Martellus Bennett and drafted TE Adrien Robinson.
Bernard played in all 16 games last season with one start. He recorded 30 tackles, three passes defensed and one forced fumble. The 33-year-old has been with the Giants since 2009 after playing for the Seahawks from 2002-09.
The way we see it
Ballard shredded his knee and has a long road back, and clearly the Giants think he's at least a year away. It's a tough break for a player who was a crucial figure, especially in the first half of last season after the loss of TE Kevin Boss. The Giants remain fairly thin at tight end and have no long-term fixtures proven at the position.
